Leona Nowicki

Leona A. Nowicki Age 91 Gaastra, MIPassed away Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI. Born: March 20, 1920 in Vulcan, MI. The daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Mastie) Dedo attended the Stambaugh Schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School. She was employed by Coleman Products until her retirement. Leona married Frank A. Nowicki on May 29, 1942 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Gaastra. The couple remained lifelong residents of the area and celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1992. Frank preceded her in death on July 16, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her brother Raymond Dedo and sister Carol Hurnevich. Leona was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian. She was an avid Green Bay Packer and Brett Favre fan and also enjoyed watching her granddaughters play sports. Her passions included cooking, reading, arts and crafts, shopping, sightseeing, soap operas, and spending the winters in Florida. Leona loved all animals, especially her dog Zoey and her daughter’s dog Mercy. She was very active, living life to its fullest, and was noted for her kindness and sense of humor. Leona was much loved and respected by her family, friends, and staff of the Iron County Medical Care Facility. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her son, Frank Nowicki of Iron River; daughters, Dr. Marilyn Nowicki of Pembroke Pines, FL and Cindy (Mark) Selmo of Gaastra; sister, Elsie (John) Urban of Detroit, MI; and granddaughters, Staci and Trisha Selmo. Visitation: Wednesday, July 6, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River. Funeral Service: Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Caspian, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
